How To Monetize Your Blog With Affiliate Marketing

So you have been running a blog for many months, even years, perhaps. You get a decent amount of traffic for your blog; let’s say you get about 100 visitors a day. That’s not bad. But you haven’t made much money from it yet. What are you doing wrong?

You have invested so much time and effort into your blog, created informative, engaging and relevant content, and yet you hardly make $100 a month from AdSense. After all, there is only so much you can make from Google AdSense as a blogger, unless you get a daily traffic that runs into tens of thousands.

If you really want to monetize your blog, you should try out affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing needs no introduction; it is the easiest way to make money online.

Basically, you will need to join an affiliate network, where you will be given a unique affiliate code to add to your blog and select the products that you would like to promote on your site. Every time you lead your visitors to the sellers website where they can complete the purchase, you will be paid a commission for your efforts – which could be anything from 5% to 60%. Let’s discuss how this works.

Here’s How to Monetize Your Blog with Affiliate Marketing

Start Blogging!

Set up a blog, if you haven’t already. If you already have a blog, it’s time to start making money out of it. We won’t go into the details of starting a blog here, as that is beyond the scope of this article, but you might want to check out this step by step training for that.

It takes at least six months before you are able to get a sizeable traffic for your blog. So you will need to work hard on your content and build your following through the social media – Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. It would help to learn the basics of keyword research and search engine optimization. The goal is to build a rapport with your audience and earn Google’s trust, so to speak, and rank high on Google’s SERPs (search engine results pages).

 Select The Right Affiliate Network

It’s time to monetize your blog with affiliate marketing. There are two ways to do this – either join the right affiliate network, or become an affiliate for an individual business. You can do both – why not!

If you sign up with a company, you will be required to promote that company’s products or services on your blog. This should be easy enough, and if you have a moderately successful blog, a number of businesses will want to take you on as an affiliate.

The other way to earn an affiliate commission from your blog is to join an affiliate network. This would allow you to promote a range of products from several different businesses that are represented by the affiliate network. A good example of an affiliate network is Amazon Associates.

Joining affiliate networks involves a simple application process; and whether you get accepted or not depends on the network. Each network has its own standards for accepting new affiliates. Some don’t care about your traffic, while others expect you to get a reasonable number of visitors on a daily basis.

What’s important is to maintain high standards and only join networks that promote high quality products or services from reputable businesses – within your niche. So, this means you cannot promote baby diapers if your blog covers topics related to technology. You can promote smartphones or laptops instead.

It would help to have a personal experience with the products being promoted. So, for example, if you have been using a particular web hosting service or domain name registrar for many years, you wouldn’t have any hesitation in recommending them to your visitors.

Which Affiliate Network Should I Join?

Some of the best affiliate networks that you may consider joining are

Amazon Associates – Amazon is one of the biggest companies in the world and has the largest affiliate network. You won’t find it hard to join Amazon Associates, the process is simple enough. Of course, Amazon being the world’s biggest store, you will have millions of products to choose from, so that’s not an issue. The problem is the commission rates on Amazon are on the lower side. But they will get higher over time as you deliver more sales for the network.

ClickbankClickbank is our favorite affiliate network as it has the highest commission rates – anything from 70% to 90%. But you will only get to promote digital products such as eBooks or online programs here.

CJ Affiliate – Commission Junction or CJ Affiliate is one of the oldest affiliate programs and pays well.

ShareASaleShareASale is another decent affiliate network where you can select products from thousands of merchants.

e-junkie – e-junkie is an affiliate network that mainly promotes digital products like eBooks and offers impressive commissions, just like Clickbank.

Rakuten Affiliate Network: This is one of the oldest affiliate networks, and offers pretty decent commission rates.

The Best Way To Promote Products

There are several different ways to promote your products. You could start a resource page, with a series of “top 10” or “top 20” articles, such as, “Top 7 Smartphones in 2017” or “Top 22 Home Appliances for Families”. Such articles get a lot of clicks.

Also popular are product reviews. So you can review the product that you are promoting. If your visitors are impressed with your review, there is every chance that they would buy the product. The important thing is to retain your objectivity and not to exaggerate the usefulness or quality of the product.

Have A Transparent Affiliate Policy In Place

The most important thing you should do as an affiliate marketer is to disclose your affiliate links, and have a clear and transparent affiliate policy on your website, visible to one and all. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has made it mandatory for all affiliate marketers to disclose their affiliate links. If you don’t, there is every chance that you could get into serious legal trouble.

    • Thanks for stopping by Mari.

I do like affiliate marketing as a business model because I have always wanted to have location freedom so to speak and be able to work from anywhere.

I actually like coffee as a affiliate marketing product because there are different ways to promote it using a blog. Depending on your angle I would say do something that sets yourself apart from the others and make it happen.

If you need help, then check out the same program that I got involved with here.
