Starting An RVing Blog
Before I jump into the specifics of setting up an RV blog its good to talk first about what it will take to be successful.
There is more to it than just setting up website and adding content.
You have to go into it with a business mindset.
There are certain habits and skills that you will need to develop in order to meet your goals as a RV blogger.
This is crucial because a blog needs content and it needs content that can be added on a regular basis.
For example I typically write about 15 to 20 blog posts per month because that is my monthly goal.
If you really enjoy the RV lifestyle and plan to make money as a full time RVer then you shouldn’t have any problems coming up with content.
The important aspect of starting an RVing blog is to just post on a regular basis to keep the search engines happy and more importantly build a following of visitors that engage with your content.
Another thing that you should be aware of is that starting an RV blog is not going to result in instant income.
Blogging also known as content marketing is a slow process but also a rewarding one.
Your basically going to be writing content for your blog and waiting for the search engines to crawl it and then rank it.
If you have written articles with some great keywords then your chances of landing in the first few pages of the search engines are good.
Before this can happen though your site will need to build up some authority.
Authority as its called is also known as trust.
It can take weeks to a few months to gain the trust of the search engines.
Niche Ideas For a RVing Blog
Once you understand that blogging is a business and a great way to support yourself living the RV lifestyle the next step is to narrow down what your blog will be focused on.
Here are some examples to consider:
- Family RVing
- RVing for retirees
- Part time RVing
- Full Time RVing
- RVing Destinations
- RV maintenance & care
- RVing in the winter
These are ideas that your blog can initially focus on with the possibility of expanding into other related niches.
How Exactly Do You Make Money
Now you might be wondering how do bloggers make money just by writing content.
You will be surprised to know that there are a number of ways and the possibilities are really up to you.
1. Affiliate Marketing
This is one of my favorite methods to make money online and one that is widely used by most bloggers.
Running an online business can involve a lot of different things that may not make it suitable for the RV lifestyle.
For example stocking inventory and shipping products.
When your traveling in a motorhome you have limited space for anything other than the basics.
So having inventory isn’t a great option.
Plus having to ship products isn’t going to work either.
This is where the affiliate marketing business model has the advantage because it will eliminate a lot of the most common problems.
With Affiliate marketing your basically selling other companies products.
You promote products and services on your RVing blog and when any of your visitors make a purchase from your referral you get a commission.
For example here is a RV blog called Do It Yourself RV that is using the Amazon affiliate program on their website to earn commissions.
They placed Amazon ads showing products related to their blog post regarding making an RV look nicer inside as shown below.
The Amazon marketplace is a popular retailer that bloggers like to use.
A large percentage of online shoppers have used Amazon and are comfortable making purchases there.
So affiliates find that they can make some decent money just by providing Amazon links and ads throughout their blog.
Its also easy to sign up once you have your website built and some content added.
Another place to look for affiliate products to promote on your RVing blog is affiliate networks.
One of my favorite is ShareAsale.
The ShareASale affiliate network is great for beginner bloggers because they accept new affiliates that are just getting started.
They also have an organized user interface making it easy to find affiliate programs related to RVing.
Advantages Of Using Affiliate Marketing
Becoming an affiliate for any company is really easy and there are many different companies that you can work worth.
Let’s look at some of the advantages of using the affiliate marketing business model to make money with your RVing blog.
- No inventory to stock
- No customers to deal with
- Work from any location
- Only need a computer and internet connection
- Promote multiple brands, products and services
- Passive income
Now you see why the affiliate marketing business model is used by a large majority of successful bloggers.
You write content, attract visitors and promote products to earn commissions.
Another way to make money with your blog would be to place ads within the content.
The easiest way is to sign up with an ad network and let them do all the work as far as supplying ads related to what your visitors are looking for.
There are different ad networks that you can sign up with such as:
- Google Adsense
Once you have the code placed on your website the ads will start showing up.
In order to really make any money using ads on your blog you will need quite a bit of traffic.
Were talking 1000’s of visitors per day.
Typically bloggers don’t make a lot of money from ads on their websites
It is just an added income stream that is passive.
So if your just getting your RVing blog started then you won’t have enough traffic to implement ads until it becomes established.
Although e-books have lost some of their popularity its still possible to sell them if you have some valuable information that someone may be interested in.
Maybe you have some rving cooking recipes that would make for a good cookbook?
Or possibly you could put together an e-book that listed maintenance tasks and some tips for beginners?
Creating an e-book is not hard and all you would need is about 5,000 to 10,000 words.
If you didn’t want to create your own you could find one on the web with resale rights or pay someone to create one for you.
Another way to make money with e-books indirectly is to give them away in order to build your email list.
When your visitors download the free e-book they would automatically be added to your email list and then you could have an autoresponder start emailing information and affiliate offers.
4. Be Creative & Think Outside The Box
There are many different ways to make money online while living the RVing lifestyle.
While doing some research I came across a family and their RVing blog.
They were using a combination of the methods I talked about in this post to make money on the road to support their travel.
But one that stood out involved coaching.
They actually provided coaching services that included:
- Buying a rig
- Working from the road
- Planning where you will go
- Lowering your burn rate
- Memberships to get
- Meeting people on the road
Plus you can talk about anything else with them that you want to know about RVing.
How are they making money with this coaching?
They have it set up so that you can call and email them.
They have set up pricing and a description on their blog of the costs and what is included.
Now I don’t know if they are having any success with this or not but I wanted to show you what is possible as an RV blogger.
You can use your blog as a business card to sell products or services to other RVer’s.
This family probably saw a need for this service and decided to turn it into a business.
Anyone that comes across their blog that is interested in RVing may use this service creating some income for the family.
How To Build Your Blog & Online Business
As I said earlier in my post there is more to setting up a successful RVing blog than just putting up a website.
There are different blogging platforms to choose from some free while others costing a good penny.
The one that is most widely used is WordPress and it has many advantages including its price which is free.
It is the same platform that I use for my blogs.
The only thing that you will need is web hosting to load the software.
If your not a technical person you will be happy to know that the software can be set up with a few clicks.
Other advantages include:
- 1000’s of free themes
- 100’s of free plugins
- Tons of knowledge available on the web
- Huge community supporting the software
- Fast updates
When your running an online business its important to keep things simple and that is what I like about using WordPress.
Start Adding Content
Once you have your website set up the next step is to start adding content.
This is where your blogging career begins.
But how do you find things to write about you might be asking?
Well it all starts with keywords and keyword research.
When someone goes to do a search in the search engine they will type in what they are looking for.
For example if I want to find a heater to use in my RV for the colder nights I might do a search for “best portable heater to use in an RV”.
The keyword is “best portable heater to use in an RV”.
Having an RV blog this would make a great blog post to have because you could review different heaters and then link to a merchant with the possibility of earning commissions.
Finding good keywords is essential to getting your content ranked.
Many bloggers use keyword research tools that help them to choose the best possible ones.
I use a keyword research tool called Jaaxy.
It gives me all the information I need such as how much traffic will that keyword get along with how competitive it will be to rank.
Learning how to choose the right keywords takes a little practice and after creating enough content its gets easier to find them and get your posts ranked.
How To Learn All This Stuff
You might be saying that this is beyond your capability and that there is too much to learn.
But that is not the case.
I got started just a couple short years ago and now earn a passive income blogging and using affiliate marketing.
Simple Cost Effective Training
Although I could have learned it on my own I wanted to cut down the learning curve and learn the right way to set up a blog.
So I joined a affiliate marketing training program run by a company called Wealthy Affiliate.
They are a company that helps beginners get started setting up a blog and writing content using a step by step course.
Its more than just a course its actually a membership site that offers everything you need as a blogger.
Including a huge community to network with.
The cost is relatively inexpensive and it even includes hosting for multiple websites.
So if your looking to get an RVing blog started I recommend that you check them out.
I even put together a free 5 step mini course to help guide you and you can contact me once you sign up for the free membership option.
