How can you make money with blogging seems to be a common question that comes up when I tell people what I do.
They seem fascinated that I can sit in a coffee shop typing up articles for my blog as a way to earn a real income with only a computer and internet connection.
With that being said I will go over some of the popular ways to use your blog as a way to generate an income and if you keep reading until the end I will also show you how you can get started with your own blog.
Let’s get started…..
Getting Started Blogging
What people don’t realize is there’s more to just setting up a blog and writing content in order to make money.
Although there have been many successful bloggers that started on a whim it’s a good idea to plan out exactly what your blog is going to be about and how you plan to make money with it.
What’s It About
First you need to decide what you’re going to write about. You may have heard it before but you need to choose a niche.
A niche is a smaller segment of a bigger market.
For example the bigger markets are health, wealth and love. These are known as evergreen markets meaning they will be around forever and there will always be the opportunity to find great niches within these markets.
The niche that you choose is going to be based on helping people get the information that they need and solve their problems.
Ultimately you don’t want to choose a niche that is too small because you’re going to need to write a lot of content around it.
At the same time you’re not going to want to choose too broad of a niche because it won’t be specific enough so people won’t know what your site is about when they land on it.
Once you have your niche figured out and you have added a decent amount of content to your blog you can now look at the different ways to make money with blogging.
Ways To Make Money With Blogging
In order to make any money from your blog you’re going to need a decent amount of traffic. Depending on the type of traffic your blog gets will help decide which is the best way to make money with your blog.
Here are the different ways to earn from your blog;
- Affiliate marketing
- Sell digital products
- Promote your offline business
- Build your email list
Some bloggers use just one type of way while others use a combination different methods to earn from their blog.
So let’s break down the different ways and how each of them works.
1. Affiliate Marketing
When it comes to making money with a blog this is probably one of the best ways possible because it’s easy to implement and just as easy to find products to promote.
As an affiliate you will be promoting other peoples products and in return they will be paying you a commission.
This is done by using affiliate links throughout your blog.
When someone clicks on that link and completes an action or makes a purchase you get credited in the form of payment.
Getting Started With Affiliate Marketing
There are a couple different ways to find products to promote as an affiliate on your blog.
Using Search Engines
You can do a search using Bing or Google by typing in the type of product that you’re looking for or your niche along with the plus sign and affiliate program after it.
For example let’s just say that I wanted to find affiliate programs for yoga.
Here is what I would type into the search bar:
Yoga + affiliate program
Whatever the product is you’re searching for or the niche just put it in place of yoga and it will bring up hundreds of different companies with affiliate programs that you can apply for.
Using Affiliate Networks
Instead of using search engines to locate different affiliate programs you can apply to affiliate networks where you will find many different affiliate programs all in one place.
Some of the advantages of working with an affiliate network:
- Receive payments from the network – instead of having to a check each of your merchants for payment all you need to do is login to your affiliate network and all the tracking and payment information is there.
So if you had 5 to 10 different merchants that you were promoting there would be no need to keep checking each one if they were all registered with the affiliate network that you joined.
- Getting paid – one of the biggest advantages of working with an affiliate network is that even if the merchant doesn’t pay your commission to the network itself the network would still pay you.
Sometimes you will hear affiliates complain because they were not paid by a merchant. This is the risk you take if you signed directly up with any merchants affiliate program.
By using an affiliate network you have a layer of protection.
- Rewards and bonuses – different affiliate networks offer different promos and bonuses to incentivize their affiliates to do more volume and get more sales.
Here is a list of some of the top affiliate networks to check out.
- CJ Affiliate
Not all affiliate Networks have the same merchants so you will need to check them out to see what merchants are available in your niche.
I have personally signed up for ShareaSale because I wanted to promote Genesis WordPress themes and I signed up for the MaxBounty Affiliate Network because I wanted to promote a few different survey sites.
Other options for making money with your blog are linking to products on big retail sites such as Amazon and eBay.
There are a lot of bloggers that run review sites.
For example there are blogs dedicated to the outdoors and camping. so those particular blogs may do reviews on tents, sleeping bags, clothing and any other products related to camping.
When doing the reviews they will put a link that goes out to Amazon or eBay and if a visitor follow that link and makes a purchase the blog owner will get their commission.
Review sites are very popular and are very easy to set up.
Another way to make money with blogging is to have advertisements on your site and when people click on these advertisements you can get paid for the click or by linking them to a product that they purchase.
Pay-per-click is a popular way of making money with blogging for those that have a lot of traffic going to their site.
One of the more popular forms of pay-per-click is Google Adsense. Advertisers pay Google to serve ads for their products or services.
As a blog owner you can sign up as a Google Adsense publisher and place ads on your blog.
There will be a large percentage of people that visit your blog but for one reason or another click off and go somewhere else.
By placing ads on your blog there is a chance that these visitors will click on one of the ads which will make you money.
The ads are typically relevant to what visitors were searching for so it is very likely that having these ads on your blog will result in some income.
Don’t expect much though because you’re only going to be paid a few cents per click so that is why it is important to have a lot of traffic going to your blog.
There are other ad networks that you can join as well and I have listed them below:
Personally I am not a fan of seeing display advertising on a blog and here’s the reason why.
It’s estimated that for every 1000 unique visitors you have you will make about 50 cents to $1. So let’s do some quick math here and see how much you can make with a busy blog.
10000 visitors per day equals $5 to $10
20000 visitors per day equals $10 to $20
30000 visitors per day equals $15 to $30
So looking at these number you can see that even with these astronomically high daily visitors you’re still only going to make about $300 to $900 per month.
Plus your blog will be cluttered up with advertisements which is a turn off for many people that visit to read your content.
3. Sell Digital Products
You can make money with blogging selling digital products such as photos, courses and ebooks.
For example if you were a photographer or you traveler then you could have a blog that allowed visitors to purchase your photos and download them from your site.
There is a demand for images online so over time it’s possible to build up a following of people that would come to your blog specifically looking for new images to purchase and download over and over again creating a residual income.
Many people also create their own ebooks.
Let’s just say that you’re blog is about gardening. You could create an ebook focused on helping beginners start their first garden.
Some bloggers may have experience or training pertaining to certain fields which could open the door to developing a course.
Maybe your a social media guru and people would be happy to pay to learn how to get more traffic from Facebook or one of the many social media outlets.
Charge a monthly fee that is reasonable and build a residual income with an updated training course.
4. Promote Your Offline Business
Making money with a blog doesn’t necessarily mean that the money has to be made online.
Let’s just say that you had a brick and mortar business that sold antiques and included jewelry, clothes, furniture and other old things.
Your blog would be used to attract antique collectors from the content that you write and then you could encourage them to visit your store to see other antiques that may not be listed on your blog.
Another example could be for a general contractor that has a blog giving remodeling tips and advice. Over time there is the possibility of generating leads from homeowners that have been reading the blog posts.
I once new a hardwood flooring installer that learned he could make money with blogging by posting pictures and explaining the procedure on each of his jobs.
Being a one man company he had enough leads per month to keep himself busy just from his blog.
5. Build An Email List
Over time your blog will start to get more and more traffic.
This is an opportunity to capture the email addresses of visitors that are interested in your content. Building an email list is a way that you can build a relationship with these visitors.
Making contact every week or two weeks is a great way to keep them interested in what your blogging about.
Over time as they begin to trust you as a blogger they will want to follow your recommendations for different products that your promoting resulting in steady income.
If you want to make money with blogging then it is important to start building an email list as soon as you start to get some traffic.
An email service with a simple autoresponder will only cost about $10 to $15 per month to get started.
How Much Money Can You Make Blogging
This is a hard question to answer because there are a lot of variables to consider such as:
- What is your niche?
- How much time will you dedicate?
- What are your goals?
Choosing a niche is important because you want to blog about something that your really into or maybe something that you can see yourself wanting to experience.
If your really passionate about something it will show in your blog and your readers will be more engaged in what you say.
With millions of blogs going online everyday your going to have to put in a concerted effort to start building content on a regular schedule.
It will take time for Google to start indexing and ranking your content.
What are your goals for starting a blog? Are you looking to be able to quit your job and work from home taking care of the kids making a little side income or are you looking to support the family?
You can’t make fast money blogging but if done right its possible to generate some income within 6 months to a year. I have seen people do it sooner but they went all out and basically made it their full time job.
With that being said you can make money with blogging but how much really can’t be determined like you can with a job.
Some of the top super affiliates make $100,000’s per month while a large majority of bloggers make $1,000 to $20,000 per year.
If you plan to make money with blogging then your going to need to treat it as a business.
Blogging is a great way to earn an income and it takes patience and some planning to do it right. There is also more than one way to make money with a blog as was shown and it is usually a good idea to diversify your income streams.
As I stated in the beginning of the post If your interested in starting your own blog I can show you a way to do it and best of all there is a free option if you want to join.
